The new La Mesa Library is 1 year old! Can you believe how quickly time flies?This Saturday, June 20, we’re having a spectacular birthday celebration. Please join us for musical performances all day. We’ll also be kicking off our Summer Reading Club for children, teens and adults.
The schedule is:
10:30AM-Hullabaloo Fun and fresh music for kids
Noon-Trails and Rails Cowboy and train songs for the whole family
3:30PM-The California Note Catchers, A capella barbershop harmonies
And what’s a birthday without cake? We’ll be serving up birthday cake at 11:30AM.
All performances will take place in the space between the library and city hall.

Liz and I have been having tons of fun choosing books to share each month at Coffee and Books. June’s selections include young adult fiction, biographies, and even some cookbooks. Please join us on Wednesday morning, June 10th, at 10am to get some book suggestions, talk about books, and have a relaxing cup of coffee. You can bring your own favorites to share too!

On Tuesday, June 9th at 10:00 am we’re offering a free class on digital photography. “A Tour of Your Digital Camera” will teach tips on using your camera, camera settings, taking good photos, composition, and transferring photos from the camera to a computer. Please bring your camera along with you so the instructor can answer your specific questions . This free class takes place in the Friends of the Library bookstore.

This Saturday, May 30th, there’s something for everyone.
In the morning, the fabulous Library Book Cart Drill Team will be marching in the La Mesa Flag Day Parade. This fun event starts at 10 am, with the parade route following La Mesa Boulevard. You can read a bit more about the parade here.
Then at 2:00 join us at the library for a relaxing concert. Leah Panos will play solo harp, filling the library with music from the Classical, Romantic, and 20th Century periods.

On Wednesday, May 27 we are breaking out the bingo set! Join us for this classic game. Play a few rounds, have some refreshments, and maybe even win some prizes. Bingo at the library is free and we keep it casual, just drop in to try your luck for a round or two.

Next week we have 3 great adult programs at the library.
The first is the monthly Writers Workshop with author Carlene Rae Dater. This will take place on Tuesday, May 19 at 10:00 am. Meet other writers, learn about publishing, and get writing practice at this popular workshop.
Then on Wednesday, May 20 we have 2 great programs. Coffee and Books will start at 10:00 am, with librarians offering reviews of hot new titles and some forgotten favorites. After that, the La Mesa Book Club for Adults meets at 11:30. We’re discussing God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything by Christopher Hitchens. It’s sure to be an intriguing conversation.

On Wednesday, May 13 at 10:00 the Alzheimer’s Association of San Diego will offer this informative, free presentation on keeping your brain healthier as you age. You’ll learn about foods, activities and exercises that can improve brain health and might also reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s disease. We’ve had some pretty wonderful concerts recently at the La Mesa Library, and I’d like to invite you to our next free performance. This Friday, April 24th at 3pm the Artemis Duet will take the stage. A violin and viola duo who originally hail from Bolivia, the Artemis Duet will play a variety of works. Bring the whole family to hear this delightful duo.
