Professional job coach Janet McAfee will be at the La Mesa Library offering tips on job searching.

The program begins at 5:00 pm on Tuesday, October 27th. Ms. McAfee will discuss job search resources (both online and books) as well as tips for coping with unemployment and advice for older job seekers.

No registration is required. The program will be held in the Friends of the Library Bookstore.

Just a reminder, we have our Coffee and Books group meeting tomorrow, October 21 at 10:00 am. We’ll offer reading suggestions from a variety of genres, both fiction and fact. And of course there will be coffee!

Following Coffee and Books, stick around for the La Mesa Library Book Club at 11:30. We’ll be discussing Accordion Crimes by Annie Proulx and you can also pick up the November selection, The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield.

On Tuesday, October 20th at 6:00 pm, City of La Mesa Fire Chief David Burk will be here as part of our Speaker Series. This gives community members a great opportunity to hear from La Mesa’s movers and shakers. Fire Chief Burk will speak and answer your questions.

Tuesday, October 20 at 10am please join us for our monthly Writers Workshop with author Carlene Rae Dater. This is a fun setting for those who are new to the craft, as well as a great place for writers with completed work to network. As always, this program is free!

This Friday, October 9th at 3pm please join us at the library for a performance by Leah Panos, harpist. This concert is free and open to all ages. Classical and contemporary works for solo harp will fill the library.

We’ll offer a concert each month in November and December as well.

Certified Financial Planner Chris Rand will be here giving a presentation called Financial Fire Drill: Planning for Uncertain Times. This is in celebration of National Financial Planning Week. The talk takes place on Thursday, October 8th at 10:00am. Mr. Rand will be available to answer your questions about finances and investing.

On Tuesday, September 29th at  6:30pm New York Life presents a free workshop offering tips on ways to teach your children the value and responsible use of money. All participants will also receive a free workbook to take home after the event.

Each month we’ll choose a different foreign film to watch and discuss on the fourth Wednesday.  This month’s selection is a Bollywood take on a Jane Austen novel.  The movie starts at 10:00am on Wednesday, September 23. Please call the branch for more details.

Water Wise Gardening

Join us at the library on Tuesday, September 22nd at 6:30pm as local landscape designer Dog Kalal gives a free lecture, “30 Great Drought Tolerant Plants for Your Garden.” This power point presentation will feature photos, flowers, foliage and fun tales from the field. You’ll get to touch and smell some wonderful water wise plants and Doug will answer your questions.
