Fourth Wednesday Foreign Film Series

New in September!

Each month we’ll choose a different foreign film to watch and discuss on the fourth Wednesday.  This month’s selection is a Bollywood take on a Jane Austen novel.  The movie starts at 10:00am on Wednesday, September 23. Please call the branch for more details.

Water Wise Gardening

Join us at the library on Tuesday, September 22nd at 6:30pm as local landscape designer Dog Kalal gives a free lecture, “30 Great Drought Tolerant Plants for Your Garden.” This power point presentation will feature photos, flowers, foliage and fun tales from the field. You’ll get to touch and smell some wonderful water wise plants and Doug will answer your questions.

Coming up in September

We have three free programs for adults in the upcoming week.

First off, don’t miss the Writers Workshop on Tuesday, September 15. Great for budding writers or those with a finished work to discuss. Author Carlene Dater answers your questions about the writing life.

Then on Wednesday, September 16,  join us at 10 am for Coffee and Books. Librarians will offer reviews on new releases and forgotten favorites. This month, we will be featuring titles for Banned Books Week.

Following Coffee and Books, our monthly Book Club will meet at 11:30 on Wednesday. Join the discussion of Kabul Beauty School and pick up the selection for October.

San Diego Hospice Program

Please join us tomorrow,  September 9th at 10:00 AM for an informative presentation about San Diego Hospice. A representative will speak about San Diego Hospice, hospice care, and will be on hand to answer your questions.

This presentation will take place in the Friends of the La Mesa Library Bookstore.

2nd Annual Trivia Contest

Once again, it’s time for the La Mesa Library Trivia Contest!

You’ll need to register at the reference desk in order to compete. Pizza and soda will be provided to pre-registered entrants while you take a brief trivia quiz to qualify for the competition. After lunch, get ready for a Jeopardy-style tournament. This contest is open to all ages. We’ll have door prizes to give away, and the grand prize winner will receive a $50 Target gift card!

Please register at the reference desk and then join us on Saturday, August 15 at 12:00 PM. Fun, food and prizes!

Writing Classes for Adults Continue

Don’t miss your chance to take free classes with published author Carlene Rae Dater. We’re really lucky to have such a great teacher here at the La Mesa Library!

The classes will be held Tuesday, July 28, and Tuesday August 11 from 6:30 to 7:30pm.

There’s still space available to learn new techniques and get some writing practice.

Summer Reading

The summer reading program is well under way and if you haven’t signed up yet, now is your chance.  Kids and teens can sign up online by going to www.sdcl.org and clicking on the Summer Reading 2009 banner.  Adults need to stop in at the library and get your reading cards.  All you need to do is read and you can earn prizes.  Plus we have lots of extra programs for the summer.  If you haven’t stopped by the library to sign up, don’t wait because the summer reading program ends August 12 for Kids, August 13 for Teens, and August 15 for Adults.

Classes for Writers This Summer

Calling all writers! We are continuing to hold the popular Writers Workshop throughout the summer. The next session takes place on Tuesday, July 21 at 10:00 am. Join author Carlene Dater to talk writing, publishing, and to network with other writers.

Carlene is also offering two more free writing classes this summer, on July 28 and August 11, both at 6:30 pm. Beginners are welcome. These classes are designed for adults, ages 18 and up.  Take some time to write this summer!

This Saturday,  July 18th, it’s time for the adults to have a chance to play the Nintendo Wii. Join us to try out a few games, see what all the buzz is about, and have fun! We’ll be playing from 10-11 am.
